In the early 1970's when I was high school student, a song came out on the radio by Skyhooks called: "Ego Is Not Dirty Word".

However this word is not without some controversy!

If you listen to the words from the old Skyhooks song, you'll see it does have some valid advice among the lyrics. It was an intelligently written song, and it was also a number 1 hit in Australia at that time.

o, why is an Ego important in Marketing?

I feel it’s due to these reasons -


1. It helps boost the confidence of the marketer. They see a picture of themselves in their advertising and feel a sense of accomplishment.
2. Customers like to buy from a person not just a faceless organization with a "spokesperson" at the helm.
3. The general public likes to get behind the underdog who's looking out for them. For example in Sydney is John Symond the owner of Aussie Home Loans, people got behind him because he was beating the big faceless banks. He's now still on his ads and people love seeing him. It was so successful he's in the BRW Rich 200.
4. When people buy your products, they feel like they are buying from a friend.

At the end of the day, people buy from people. People like to "identify" with a leader or figurehead of an organization - that's why joining clubs and associations are so popular. Your business can be treated just the same.

Do you think that this idea was left out of Sir Richard Branson's thinking? I don't think so. He's the man, he's the company, and he likes to market himself as the underdog who beats the bigger faceless rivals.

I think it can and you need to consider the possibilities of using such a marketing methodology too.

- You'll be seen as a person who has a voice - yes, a voice for the consumers
- You'll be a person other successful business people will "seek out" to do joint ventures with (hard to do if you're an 'unknown')
- You'll be a person the media sees as "an expert", which will give your business loads of free PR marketing opportunities
- As a direct result of your public face in the media, you'll get sales from people who 'got to know you' via all the free press you're getting

Let me say this, even those guys who go on the media regularly who look like the 'shy types' are still using the press to get their message across.

By what I've seen on the internet, with the big name internet guru marketers, they also got there in part due to a willingness to show their face in full view of the public. Why do they cop abuse from other marketers? Because I think others are jealous or simply won't face up to public scrutiny.

How to Boost Your Ego – and - Win Your Market Share

1. Never say no to an interview with the media.
2. Put your face on your website, business cards and letterheads.
3. Give speeches anywhere and everywhere. Every talk you give can earn your business and yourself loads of money because you are answering concerns your market place has about your product niche. If you give a talk each week, you'll soon see people waiting to buy from you. You'll kick yourself why you didn't do it ever before!
4. Run free tele-classes, go on the radio and answer late night callers. Get yourself out and about.
5. Be willing to show your pictures in your newspaper ads. Remember - people buy from people buy from people they know.

This is the way you can truly stand alongside your product and your business.
