Creating Passive Online Income ...

Why do so few make a living online?

I would say its "90 - 10 rule" here.

My Story

I first began in the internet world in 1999. After years of telling my friends “the internet was only a fad”. I got my first email address in July of '99 and my first website about 3 months after that. Which today I still own www.SimplySolo.com  I specialize in singles, dating and relationships.

At the time I joined online was when I was holding seminars and other singles events. An online dating company approached me and I thought it was just another way for me to advertise my singles events.

They said that if I referred to them people, I would get a little commission and if the customer purchased again commissions would still be credited to me. I was rapped as they say. The first month I was online I made almost $400 for what hardly seemed work to me.

During the year 2000 I was going out with a nice lady who later that year made a life changing comment about me - she said I was always tired on weekends and was ignoring her needs. I thought wow, she was so right! My desk job back then plus running a business part time and another part time job on top of that was way too much work. I took her advice and aimed for semi-retirement as my goal.

Guess what was "working" in my life?

Yes, you guessed, it was my website!

I was making a steady income. I simply needed to give it more attention. By 2001, and a little more time spent on my website, I was able to reduce my time at the desk job to about 2 half days a week.

To cut a long story short. By late 2004 I was able to leave the day time work behind altogether. Thanks to the internet and passive income made online.

Here's what I suggest for anyone wanting to learn how to build a real business online.

1. Build A Real Business

One that stacks up well offline as it does online. Otherwise you might be creating a 'house of cards' and have no real support to your online business.

2. It Must Make Money Almost Instantly

People who are seduced to make money online won't hang around if all they get is a website and don't know what's next. I've seen hundreds of so called online make money websites, few which the results could be duplicatable in a "Joe 6 Pack's" life.

3. Traffic To Your Website

I don't use pay per click. 97% of my traffic comes from search engines. This is why I’ve become so lazy over the last few years. I have so many pages and pages (hundreds of pages in fact) on my websites these days it practically drives itself.

4. Use Publicity

About 3% of my traffic comes from publicity. And like wow does that work like a charm for me! If I get an opening on a radio or TV program or a national newspaper it’s a cash spitting marvel. And it’s free to get publicity. I often see the newspapers or current affairs programs as my business gift givers. Just like banks throw money at you, the media is the same. Your business could use publicity? Think about it - it works. This is a good test, most website businesses would be hard pressed to get any publicity. So make sure yours can get publicity to be a hit seller.

5. Sell What People Actually Buy (uh? derr)

There are so many eBook fads out there, but few if any make it to the top in creating a real income. Get your efforts behind things people buy and buy again on a regular basis.

6. Do Your Own Website Design

Most of the ones who try out being online are clueless about how it works because they don't learn how to design and upload a simple website. Look it really is easy, otherwise why wouldn't they teach it at high school then huh? If you can use Word or Excel - using FrontPage is just as easy. Plus you'll be more connected to the result (or the lack thereof), you’ll know more about earning money online if you do.

7. Multi-Websites

I now have over 25 websites - which gives me lots of traffic from various market segments. This actually took me years to develop. But it does work. (See my websites on www.DavesOnlineWorld.com  ) Don’t expect one website to do everything. One website must equal one market specialty – it shouldn’t look like a “Sunday General Market”.

8. Database Marketing

Confession time. I was a late comer to this myself. A pal of mine constantly told me at our lunch meetings I should grab emails and create newsletters. I was doing so well at my passive income from search engine traffic it took a dip in my traffic for me to take my mates advice seriously. Now I have over 16 newsletters and my websites have very sophisticated lead captures. It’s amazing how my business has grown by this.

Again it’s the 90 – 10 Rule here. A lot of people going online have a "fractured focus". As such the ones who do have a genuine focus and listen to the market, have a better chance of success.

You could be in the top 10% by simply asking yourself;

• Why am I doing this?
• How will my business really look like?
• Does it have publicity potential?
• Have I written a marketing plan yet?
• Do I have a sales focus?
• Do I have a friend who IS a success at internet marketing helping me?
• Can I listen to market feedback and correct my plans if needed?
• Do I have stick-ability?

If you take this approach, I’m sure you’ll be on the pathway to success.
